In the basements of IRCAM, researchers attempt to reinvent an 18th-century aria that the Italian castrato Farinelli sang nightly to the King of Spain to soothe his melancholy. Using artificial intelligence, different human voices blend to reconstruct the singer’s near-supernatural vocal range.
